Progress continues at Newton-le-Willows Police Station as leaders lay commemorative bricks

Construction of the new police station in Newton-le-Willows has reached another milestone as Merseyside’s Police Commissioner and Deputy Chief Constable joined the St Helens North MP and the Mayor of St Helens Borough, laying commemorative bricks at the site this week.

Emily Spurrell, Chris Green, David Baines and Cllr Seve Gomez-Aspron visited the site to take a tour and see how work is progressing on the purpose-built neighbourhood police station, which is replacing the outdated facility nearby.

Designed to enhance operational efficiency, community engagement, and officer wellbeing, the new modern station will feature a General Enquiry Office, interview and meeting rooms, and a multi-faith space, as well as sustainable technologies to support Merseyside Police’s Net Zero goals.

The commemorative, personalised bricks symbolise the collaborative effort behind the project and the commitment to delivering a station that reflects the needs and aspirations of the Newton-le-Willows community.

Located at the junction of Market Street and Peel Street and within the Earlestown Conservation area, the new station has been designed to be sympathetic to the town’s historic character, reflecting the traditional terraced layout with a double gable-ended slate roof and using red-brown brick.

Once completed, it will replace the existing building, which has served the community for more than four decades and is now outdated and no longer fit for purpose.

The development in Newton-le-Willows is a key part of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s 12-year plan to continue to modernise and update Merseyside Police’s stations and buildings to ensure officers and staff are in the right places and best equipped to serve communities across the region.

Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell said: “Today’s visit is a proud moment for everyone who is working to bring this project to life.

“The laying of these commemorative bricks is testament to the strength of community voice and the importance of listening to local people. They asked for a modern, accessible police station, and we are delivering exactly that.

“This new facility is a promise to the people of Newton-le-Willows that their safety, wellbeing, and connection to their local policing team remain a top priority. It will make it easier for residents to report crime, seek support, and engage with officers in a welcoming and professional environment.

“We are building a station that reflects the values of this community and the future of policing. I’m incredibly grateful to our partners and the local residents who have supported this journey. Together, we are creating a hub that will serve Newton-le-Willows for generations to come.”

Deputy Chief Constable Chris Green said: “It gave me great pleasure to be able to lay a commemorative brick at a building that will become such a vital asset to the community and policing in Newton-le-Willows well into the future.

“This outstanding purpose-built neighbourhood police hub will replace our existing facility nearby, and ultimately provide our officers and staff with all the tools they need to keep people safe.

“As an accessible General Enquiry Office it will provide the local community with an essential service and we encourage the people of Newton-le-Willows to embrace this wonderful new building.

“As ever, the people employed by Merseyside Police are at the heart of everything we do, but it is fantastic to know that they will be afforded with the physical capabilities required to tackle crime in today’s world and for years to come.”

Councillor Seve Gomez-Aspron MBE, Mayor of St Helens Borough, added: “This investment in Newton-le-Willows is just one of the many exciting developments happening here in the area and this scheme will complement the ambitious regeneration plans that will see this area benefit from millions of pounds in funding.

“It was an honour to lay these commemorative bricks as we see this scheme advancing and providing a sustainable future for community policing in our borough for many years to come.”

Matthew Wall, Public Sector Director, Morris & Spottiswood Construction said: “We are delighted to be working with Merseyside Police on their new Police Station in Newton-le-Willows and this brick laying ceremony marks a significant milestone in the delivery of the project.

“The next stage will see us complete the external façade and the commencement of the internal fitout. We look forward to seeing this project take shape and to the positive impact it will bring to the local community and everyone involved."
