Funding available for local groups to support a safer, stronger Marian Square

Community groups, charities and grassroots organisations are being encouraged to apply for a share of £28,000 funding, made available through money seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
Grants ranging from £500 to £4,000 are available for projects that will benefit the Marian Square and surrounding area.
Whether an organisation is looking to expand an existing initiative or launch something new, this funding offers a valuable opportunity to make a real difference, using money taken directly from those who harm Merseyside communities through the Proceeds of Crime Fund.
Applicants will have the opportunity to pitch their ideas directly to the community at the Marian Square Matters ‘Big Bid’ Event, taking place at the L30 Community Centre on Monday 19 October 2026. A panel will vote to decide which projects receive funding.
Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell said: "One of the most rewarding things about our Proceeds of Crime Fund is being able to take money away from criminals and put it back into the heart of our communities, supporting the people and organisations who are working hard to make a positive difference every day.
"We know there is a huge amount of passion, pride and community spirit in Marian Square, and this funding is a fantastic opportunity for local groups to turn great ideas into reality. Our Big Bid events also give residents a direct say in how the money is spent, helping ensure it supports the projects that matter most to local people.
"I’d encourage any eligible group to apply and get involved. Together we can invest in initiatives that bring people together, support local residents and help make Marian Square a safer, stronger and more vibrant place to live."
Sergeant Lou Watson, Sefton Proactive Team said: “This initiative takes cash out of the pockets of criminals and puts it back into local communities, which is where it belongs.
“Marian Square has some fantastic community organisations that work tirelessly to support local people, and this funding is designed to help them do even more.
“Whether you're a sports club, youth group, or outreach service, that can help bring people together, support young people or tackle anti-social behaviour then we want to hear from you.”
Applications are open to voluntary or community groups based in and around Marian Square, or those intending to use the funding to benefit residents in the area.

Eligibility Criteria
- The maximum bid allowed is £4,000.
- Multiple bids from a single organisation/group/applicant will not be accepted.
- Those bidding must be from a community group operating or intending to use funding within The Marian Square area (see map provided).
- Constituted and Non-constituted groups can apply.
- A representative from the community group must provide a 2-minute pitch on the day of the ‘Big Bid’ event outlining their proposed bid.
- If electronic media is to be used to support the 2-minute pitch these will be included in the 2-minute allocated time slot. Electronic media must be shared with Sgt 2633 Watson by 5th October 2026 via the below email.
- Basic Vetting will be completed by Merseyside Police prior to the event and applications may be subject to a shortlisting process dependant upon the number of bids received.

- Shortlisting will take place on 14th September 2026, successful applicants will be notified as soon as practicable after this date.
